I’ve been in the middle of a lot of creativity and growth recently…making some big changes in my programs and offerings (more on that later). Plus, I’ve been taking a number of people through my Individual Life Reboot journeys (wonderful, but intense!) I guess you could say it’s been a very FULL few months.
So much so, that I dropped out of the habit of writing blogs for my community here for the last couple of months. Which, of course, was not sitting great with me because…well, I love you guys!
The funny thing is that for the past four weeks, I kept thinking about writing, but then a second thought froze me in my tracks: ‘Well, after dropping off for awhile, you better have something pretty damn good to come back to them with!’
And voilà… I got kidnapped for another month by perfection.
This is not a new pattern for me. I am a recovering perfectionist.
Yes, my quest for perfection has hijacked many projects, events, and quality interactions in my life.
A turning point, though, came a few years ago when I was preparing to do a big talk. I was so obsessed with getting every word right that I had wound myself into a wild-eyed state. Luckily, a friend who knew me well saw this happening and gave me a little talking to.
He said: “People aren’t going to leave your talk remembering if every word was perfect, they’re going to remember how you made them FEEL. If you get too stuck in your head trying to make your delivery flawless, you won’t be bringing your presence and connection to them. And your presence is where your real magic is.” (it’s where everybody’s real magic is!)
That’s when I started practicing this mantra…
PRESENCE OVER PERFECTION.
These three words have helped me bring high impact projects to fruition, deepen relationships, create more freely and powerfully, and feel my life more richly. It’s also (when I finally remembered it again) what got my procrastinating butt in gear to write you today.
In the grand scheme of life, being truly present is far more of a gift to the world than trying to be perfect.
Is there a place in your life today where you could concentrate on being fully HERE as opposed to stuck trying to make things perfect in your head? A business meeting? Picking up the kids from school? Doing something creative? Reaching out to someone?
SHARE with me (on whatever platform you found this) where in your day you’re going to kick perfection to the curb to make room to really SHOW UP in this life.
And for my part, I’m going to be reaching out more often. It won’t always be brilliant, but it will be filled with my love.
