Joy took me or a run the other day.
Let me set the stage… I’ve been taking a couple of courses to help me build some exciting new things (more on that in the coming weeks!) I love learning but trying to find time to take in and execute all the course work, on top of an already full coaching schedule, has been challenging.
Because of this, I’m in super-efficient mode. I’ve been fitting this work into every available nook and cranny in my schedule…including listening to my course lectures while doing my runs.
I figured it was a great way to feed two birds with one scone! (how can you tell a vegan is writing this?)
The other day, though, as I went outside for my run, newest lesson ready on my iPhone, I stopped.
After a bad cold snap, the air was suddenly so mild and the air so delicious. Even though I knew not multi-tasking during my run would put me behind in my tight schedule, I just needed to make space to celebrate this precious day.
So, I put on some music I love and just RAN……. No information, no agenda…just pure simple JOY.
I fully felt myself striding through the soft air, took in the smell of melting snow, felt the sun land on my face. I let my joy get as big as it wanted to be.
I came out of that short 5K run feeling more relaxed and alive than I’d felt in awhile.
And when I went back to my work? Well, I had so much more focus and creativity flowing that I probably doubled my productivity that afternoon.
This was just yet another little reminder for me of how imperative it is to make time for joy…even when your to-do list is overflowing and your mission feels pressing (especially when your to-do list is overflowing and your mission feels pressing).
Joy is FUEL for our life missions. It contains the kind of expansive and revitalizing energy that can move mountains. And it’s an energy that needs to be cultivated daily if you have important things you’re trying to do in this world.
